Out with the Old…
… in with the new they say.
Did you find the lost treasure Florian (who is too modest about his rookie contribution as a Design Team member - he was invaluable!) hinted at?
I’ll shed some light on that, too.
When we took over the licence for Warlord we had to reevaluate our many ideas. When you pitch such a thing to yourself, a lot of ideas sound great. When you are actually tasked with carrying through, you need to be honest to yourself.
We wanted old and new at the same time. It was obvious that many players remember Warlord fondly from the “yonder years”, but that Warlord has developed into a direction where it left a lot of players behind. So we want to capture some of that old school feeling.
At the same it was apparent that we would need something to kick players awake and remind them that Warlord is the greatest card game on Earth (hey, I am allowed to be biased). Besides having RPG Superstar Christine Schneider work on the background and the new bold traits you have already seen we decided on this:
In line with expanding the scope of the Warlord: Saga of the Storm universe, we are introducing a new faction, The Chosen. These masked beings rule supreme in the empire of Thessyria, once a haven of culture, learning… and decadence. Now the former human rulers are reduced to serving their new masters as thralls, always with the threat of daemons coming down on them while The Chosen elite vie amongst themselves for power and positions.
The arrival of the Accordlands armies unbalances their intricate games and suddenly The Chosen are faced with an enemy that is much more experienced in outright war than they are. But The Chosen are powerful and will learn quickly.
This clash is the background for Warlord 4E and I hope you’ll have as much fun with it as we are having. Warlord 4E will be a time for heroes!

well done. Just well done… I hope that many players are looking forward to play with the chosen.
Still i am wondering about the distribution in the 12 starter decks.

PS.
I am also very glad to see that jason engle is part of the illustrators in 4E. He is my favorite illustrator after all…

Cool. Now we just need to see the arrival of the Mantis Clan in the Accordlands and everything will be right with Warlord. LOL

….. I hate to say this, but I am disapointed! It seems that one of the main mechanics of “The Chosen” is sacrificing, and I thought that was an Elven thing… Sure, new colors, and bold traits are cool, but I am already concerned with the focus of this faction, and it’s success in general!

Yeah! I stick to P.J. and support the elvish jealousy here :p I love the purple border, and the art of the cards, but killing their own people is what elves do best
June 18th, 2008 at 1:32 am
Yeah these feel a lot like the elf recycler decks, I am tempted to play them, but I would have to be convinced that they work…more spoilers please XD

Recursion and Sacrifice are two different things. The Elves bring the minions of the undead back to play. These guys look like they will be offering up sacrifices to make The Chosen Stronger and appease their Daemon overseers. I am guessing they will have mechanics built around the number of characters in the Discard or sacrifices in a turn

Hmmm…yeah…Fade´s gotten a point. Let´s see what happens next…
June 18th, 2008 at 3:30 am
they’re like Devs and Elves combined
I dont see them lasting long
June 18th, 2008 at 4:12 am
I don’t think they are anything like Devs, but Fade does have a good point… We shall see. As a friend of mine so poetically stated, “I am cautiously optimistic,” or will try to be at least… I very much love this game so good or bad I’m in it for the long haul… I just don’t want this to be like L5R! On a side note, is it safe to say that Mercs are going to be a support faction “Only?” Just curious!

Btw, just a question regarding charges…are they permanent or only until end of turn?
June 18th, 2008 at 6:41 am
Charges are permanent unless they get removed somehow.
June 18th, 2008 at 6:46 am
Charges stay on a card unless an ability says to remove them…so in Master Asrapi’s case, they would be permanent.
June 18th, 2008 at 6:49 am
Charges are permanent They don’y go away at the end of turn.

They are really different to play than the elves. It’s interessant and fun. I mean when you have to kill one of your characters in order to make other stronger, it’s cool, but you also have to take care of your ranks so it’s not so easy to play. They are tactical in fact. You must kill the right number of characters at the right moment.
Don’t judge them too soon, You will be surprised how they are fun to play. You also didn’t see the best characters of this faction at the moment.
June 18th, 2008 at 8:44 am
i agree with fade. let’s see first. and i do not think that warlord is going to be like l5r, because of one new faction. And since it is not collectable anymore, i cant find it hard to be able to have a compettitive deck for each of the 7 factions.
Anyway that is just my oppinion (i always am very optimistic person)

Master Asrapi will be fun to play out of JautyaSyn at the very least (when playing open)!
