Chris Dyer wins King of the Hill

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

Congratulations to Britain’s Chris Dyer who in his third finals appearance convincingly led Morghen the Undying  to a win over Niobe piloted by Paul St. Paul from  Berlin.

Morghen once again

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

In the tournament by the sea Morghen the Unliving prevails once more. In a close final against Dimos Liberis’ Yavlo the gracious host Petros Meletakos went undefeated and chose Free Kingdoms as the Elves favorite enemy.

The faction distribution once more was very even: Every Faction was represented and none had more than 3 Warlords in the field.

During the night (literally) the Open tournament was completed, while the lights of the city sparkled from across the bay (did I mention what beautiful setting we have here?).

Today a light breeze has picked up, making it very comfortable to sit on the terrace. Currently we are waiting for some players to get stocked up on enough coffee to get going again, then we’ll continue with Doubles. These Warlord players here are a hardy lot, I can tell you.

The Way of the Ancients

… the ancient Greeks that is.

I am in lovely Loutraki now for the Greek Summer Campaign event. We are having lots of fun and I wanted to share with you from this last trip of the year.

How do the Greeks run a tournament?

Easy:

You sleep in, then have a nice breakfast on the hotel terrace looking out on the beautiful bay.

After that you decide to go to the beach, some guys went swimming (me included), then rejoined the others in the coffeehouse (looking out over the beautiful bay and the beach).

Time to go to the tournament, you think? No, lunch is first, loads of it, all shared on a table (the way only the Greek do it). Did you say Ouzo? No, of course there was nothing of that. I still feel dizzy from not having any.

So now we are back at the hotel, trying to get the tournament software to run and we are about to start soon. My, it’s way to hot, really. It’s 5 p.m. btw ;-). If you ever entertained a thought (the European warlord players that is) to come to Greece - next time Manolis organizes something you really should! We are having a blast!

NA Championships Standings

Here are the full Standings after Swiss for the GenCon Singles Tournament. (more…)

Matt Cotton’s Morghen wins GenCon!

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

We are back from GenCon. There’ll be more results soon, but here’s the most important one: Matt Cotton won the North American Championship with his Morghen the Undying deck in a very decent field of 62 players.  Congratulations, Matt!

In the finals he beat Chris Dalbo’s Logan Ebonwoulfe, Corey Paradise playing Krenthor Gouge took third place due to better placement in the swiss rounds than Tommy Pistole who played a surprising Pinion deck.

The distribution of factions was amazingly even: Every faction had at least 6 Warlords in the field, at most 12. Also every faction was represented in the cut!

Designer wins!

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

I guess it’s my fault. When I tagged the new Medusan Lord as being “overly strong in order to compensate for its player’s weak playing skills” I failed to make the irony apparent to all.

So our lead designer Oliver Schaaf felt challenged and responded by selecting the deck (Scyrax level 4s) the thought best currently and piloting it mercilessly to a 9-0 match and 18-1 game record in the Osnabrück Summer Campaign. With it being the best attended so far (at 34 players) this was no small feat.

Very interesting was the fact that six factions were present in the top 8 (dwarves were missing coming in with two King Alarics at 11th and 12th place), with only Nothrog boosting three Warlords (Scyrax twice and Seth’rokh, IIRC). Other Warlords were Sanga-Kish, Morghen the Unliving, Yavlo the Kindled, Queen Yahia, and Captain Alera. The environment is incredibly even, which makes preparing for GenCon a very interesting task.

A new Medusan Lord was revealed, piloted by Oliver Schaaf: Queen-Mother Nyssara, introducing a unique Vaneris Wizard, who does not start with any items attached!

In the other Summer Campaign this week-end, Yavlo piloted by John Zimmerman took away the first place medal in the also very well attended Bayonne, New Jersey Summer Campaign event (29 players). No Nothrog in the top 8 here, btw. Congratulations to both winners!

The Warlord Sell-a-thon, Fin

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

It’s over guys! And despite claims to the contrary, due to some last minute orders (Thanks to Brazil, amongst others!!!) we made the goal!

That’s 100% (actually 105% or so) !

My thanks go to everybody supporting Warlord this weekend - it means a lot on a psychological level as well!

Here’s the artwork of the new Medusan Lord- go wild on speculating about her powers :D.

Oliver’s Medusan Lord

The Warlord Sell-a-thon, Part 11

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Less than 8 hours left in the Sell-a-thon. And we have come far. To 72% actually and the Medusan Lord is almost visible. May speculation run rampant!

I believe if we want to reach the 100%, we need a few more members in the Ordo Phoenicis Ascendentis. Remember: Your chance for running a Medusan Lord? Getting extra APS with each Aeris you buy? And also 10.000 gp? Go for it - it’s not going to be this good for a long, long time!

And here’s another preview for you:

Slash and Lunge

The Warlord Sell-a-thon, Part 10

Monday, July 13th, 2009

14 hours to go and we have surpassed the 61% mark. Everything is still possible - we might get a full reveal of the new Medusan after all!

First a few more previews, though:

The Warlord Sell-a-thon, Part 8: Gold Rush

Monday, July 13th, 2009

We are getting there, slowly - you guys are great!

In order to sweeten the pie - for every one of the aeris you buy (this includes those who bought any over the course of the week-end) you get 10.000 virtual gp. “So what?” you say? Well, think GP auction at or around GenCon. Those extra 10K here and there might come in handy.

As for when this Sell-a-thon ends: Due to the many different time zones we have Warlord players in (Europe, US, Japan/Philippines) I am going to end it Monday night midnight German Time (that’s GMT +2 due to SST, I believe). Anyway - that’s 22:30 hours from now.
