FAQ

Are boosters gone for good?
In the foreseeable future, yes. The production of randomly sorted starters and boosters is prohibitively expensive at the print runs we do.

Why did you have to make Warlord so expensive? My friends cannot afford it any more…
Actually Warlord overall became cheaper. Taking out the random distribution (boosters) was the only way to control the risk of producing too many cards.
What you get now is two tournament legal decks for $31.99, including 20 rares for which you would have bought 2 starters at $12.99 + 14 boosters at up to $3.99 before. That’s $81,84.

While having boosters at first makes sense, they are obsolete once you have a certain amount of cards. For 4E they are pretty much obsolete from the start, because nearly all of the commons and uncommons are reprints from earlier editions, which you can get easily from other players for the most part.

So if you consider the rare cards only now a rare card costs you $1.78 (even excluding the Warlords!), whereas before you needed a booster for each rare (at $3.99) - and had the risk of getting everyone but the one you needed.
So, eventually the game gets cheaper, but starting out seems more expensive. Yes and no. By the time you decide to start playing Warlord, you should already have played a game or two - either with a friend’s cards or with the downloadable demo decks. Playing Warlord takes a certain amount of investment, but then every TCG/CCG does. Producing a game like this continuously doesn’t come cheap either and from what we hear, so far the game is as balanced and as much fun as ever!

Suggestion #1: Find a friend and split a set. Each gets a fully tournament legal starter. From there it’s easy to fill out your collection.

Suggestion #2: Trade away the cards in your set for the cards you want.

Suggestion #3: Ask veteran players for 4E legal commons and possibly uncommons. Many Warlord players are willing to share their old cards, especially if they have bundles of them
