In Memoriam: Thomas Manning

Assigning art in general is a lot of fun. It wasn’t today. Minutes ago I received a mail from Thomas Manning’s widow that he passed away. Since I have no further information, I’ll tell you what I do know: Thomas Manning has been instrumental in defining the Monsters for Warlord: Saga of the Storm.

He is the artist who brought us the original Brine Fiend, the Darkfeast Harpy, Swamp Gaunt and many other creatures of the darkest kind. I would have loved to have his art in Warlord 4E as well. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife.

It usually is kind of hard to twist previews out of Oliver’s grasp. Today I must have hit a weak spot and he let me spoil this one.

It’s a very quick mockup I did myself - don’t worry the printed card will look as crisp as they usually do. Oh - and the flavor text I just made up. It bears no meaning to anything in the 4th Edition.

I am worn out. I bless my many years as a roleplaying game master (or Dungeon Master as they are called when playing D&D) that I could come up with so many images.

But now I am spent.

Today I wore the art directors hat. I looked at dozens of mechanical card descriptions and tried to turn them into something visible, something right out of a D&D adventure. For some it was easy. For some not so.

Next I tried to match my image with an artist I trust to put it onto canvas. Or Photoshop, Painter, whatever.

Every artist has his or her own style. Some have a long history with Warlords and hardly need any direction. Others are new to Warlord and need more explanation. For some cards I have something very specific in mind, so I need a lot of explanation anyway. And so on.

In both cases it means either looking through a lot of old cards to get a feeling for the style - or browsing dozens of websites and looking at a lot of fantasy pictures. Yes, you can get an overdose of fantasy warriors and fearsome beasts.

Now I am almost through. Most assignments are out and I am only saving a few slots for the promo cards that haven’t been finalized yet. Need some decent artwork for that, too…

Time to go to bed. Maybe I can dream up a few more art descriptions…

I sent my wife away. I sent my daughter away. And I opened the door when They came.

Who are They? Well, let’s cut out the mysterious sounding crap and get to business. “They” simply are some friends who have been playing Warlord “back when” and turned away from it. I invited them for a pre-playtest session last night, and mayhem ensued.

This is a photo of my living room, just as we started:

What I enjoyed most, was the initial reactions. When they read the new Warlords the response ranged from “WOW” to “That’s SOOOO Broken!”. But listening to the tone of their voices was most important to me: they were full of glee and anticipation.

At the end of the day (or rather the middle of the night), we had barely tested 3/4ths of the new Warlords. As was to be expected, some are too strong, especially in combination with some cards, others were lacking. The overall tempo of the game is not quite right yet. But that’s what playtest is for and I know it will be fixed in playtesting. Most important to me was, that it was so much fun they didn’t want to go home.

Now I have an hour to get my living room fixed, before They are at the door again.

The Way of the Cleric

The ring of metal clashing was thunderous in his ears and the smell of sweat and blood assaults him as the dwarven cleric stomped his way through the battlefield. All around him his warriors battle against the barbaric Nothrog. Dwarven skill and craftsmanship matched evenly with their cunning savagery.

He turned, his heavy warhammer smashing aside an enemy that had made it through the dwarven shield line. Still he strode on, quickly coming to the side of a fallen warrior. He knelt beside the fallen dwarf, his knees sinking into the blood soaked earth.

He began to chant, his hands held over his felled comrade as he called upon Kor for healing. His voice deepened, resounding through the earth as Kor answered his prayers and slowly, the fallen dwarf’s wounds began to close, skin knitting itself back together. The dwarf opened his eyes slowly, grimacing at his weakness.

“On your feet lad. Kor won’t stand for any napping during this battle!” The cleric stood again, not waiting for the dwarf to stand before turning back to the front line. He raised his warhammer high and began another chant, his voice carrying even over the din of battle. As he marched forward, his war chant continued, and once again Kor granted his aid. As his chant rang out, the dwarves began to fight with renewed strength, and vigor.The blessing’s of Kor steeling their resolve.

His war chant still ringing out loudly, the dwarven cleric plunged into battle. Calling upon Kor for strength in battle, his warhammer smashed aside his enemies, as the divine blessings of Kor kept him safe from harm, as blades were turned aside and wounds closed instantly.

For too long Clerics have hid safely in the back ranks, while healing and readying their minions.

From the beginning, it has seemed that clerics should fight in front ranks. The have had warhammers, armor, 1 rank range actions, etc. that suggested they should be on the front line. However, it never stacked up that they should bother. Oh a few clerics
tried to survive on the front ranks, but it was rather difficult and never worked to well.

In D&D, clerics can wear just as good of armor as fighters and carry shields. They obviously don’t do as much damage, but they are often on the front lines, helping protect the rogues and wizards behind them. It is time for the Clerics of Warlord to do the same and take the battle to the front lines. They will still buff and support their army, but now they may be found leading their armies from the front, healing and supporting while still being pro-active and attacking the opposing army.

From a design stand-point, this is gone about two ways:

The first way is making sure clerics have the items they need. Decent low level armor and weapons, especially ones that give out bonuses to them and their allies (Balian’s helm for example).
The second, more important way, is action cards. Making healing and buffs that do not require spending, but have a limited range, it allows clerics to support their army as normal, while still performing offensive spend orders.

The new Warlords

I am being unfair. Richard wasn’t allowed to spoil anything of real substance in his Designer Diary, which led to some rampant speculation on the nature of the “new” Warlords.

Now I get to set that straight with real information. To hit the fine line, I’ll talk generalities and let Richard spoil some more information in his next Designer Diary.

You already know we are going to have six starters with two decks each. The twelve Warlords we selected for them we have chosen for their mechanics, for their story-line relevance and for fitting what we feel makes each faction unique.

Here is the thing: Of the twelve Warlords only one is an MRP with an updated text box. Eleven are new Warlords - even though some of those might be more experienced versions of previous characters in the game.

Many of these characters play a role in what will be happening in the Accordlands. I look forward to those stories.

Two more Warlords we will give out as promo cards at the start: One will be part of the promo pack for the Ordo Phoenicis Ascendentis, one will be the reward for people pre-ordering (and pre-paying) the set before it comes out. They will be available through other means at some point later.

The day Gary E. Gygax died

While we were discussing Warlords Gary E. Gygax passed away.

Without him, there wouldn’t be Warlord. In fact, there wouldn’t be WoW. Or roleplaying. Or any of the many fantasy inspired games we all enjoy.

Gary Gygax invented a whole industry by publishing the first rules for Dungeons & Dragons.

My own first contact with D&D was with the Red and Blue boxes, freshly translated into German. We didn’t really know what Role-Playing was back then, but the idea of going out to have adventures, slay Dragons, and live what we previously had only read in books, immensely appealed to my friends and me. I was 14 at the time.

Years - and a huge amount of RPG and fantasy books putting permanent bends in the boards holding them - later I am in charge of trying to give you - the Warlord players - just a fraction of the entertainment Gary Gygax made possible for us. Something to remember.

Gary Gygax passed away on March 4th, 2008 at the age of 69.
